Calling Him Home

Carroll College is bidding farewell to our Athletic Director Curt Apsey after a productive year on the job. Apsey will be returning to Boise State University where he has accepted the position of Director of Athletics.

Apsey began at Carroll in October of 2014, and although his time has been brief, he has made significant contributions to the athletic program. Under his guidance, CarrollAthletics.com was launched, which recently was named the best website in the NAIA. In addition, Apsey brokered a partnership through BSN SPORTS to have Nike be the official apparel and equipment provider for all 15 of our Fighting Saints athletic teams. He has also been active in developing a new strategic plan for the department to help guide the program moving forward. During his tenure, Carroll was awarded the Frontier Conference's Bandy All-Sports Award and our nearly 400 student-athletes had an impressive overall combined GPA of 3.24.

“Our president, Tom Evans, and the athletic staff and faculty at Carroll are a big part of what makes this such a special place,” Apsey said. “They all put an enormous amount of time and effort into making things better here. The new website, our agreement with Nike, the sponsorship sales agreement with the Independent Record and the new strategic plan are all things that will improve the student-athlete and fan experience for years to come. I am proud of what we were able to accomplish in a short amount of time and a lot of the credit goes to everyone on campus.”

Prior to arriving at Carroll, Apsey had been with Boise State University for 16 years serving as the senior associate athletic director for the past nine years.

Kyle Baker ‘06, current chief of staff, is serving as the interim director of athletics while the college evaluates the appropriate timing of a search and subsequent hire of a new athletic director.

Please join us in wishing Curt and his wife, Teresa, all the best as they head home to Boise.

Making the Grade

Our student-athletes turned in a stellar academic performance for the spring semester. Overall, the nearly 400 Carroll student-athletes had a 3.27 spring GPA, which brought the combined 2014-15 cumulative GPA to 3.24.

"We have high academic expectations at Carroll College and I am excited that we continue to meet and exceed those expectations," Athletic Director Curt Apsey said. "Our coaches recruit the right kind of player, it shows in the success that we have in competition and in the classroom."

Of Carroll's 15 sports, 14 had a GPA over 3.0. Women's golf led the way with a team GPA of 3.563, just edging out women's cross country who came across the line with a 3.561 team GPA. Football had an outstanding showing with a 3.21 GPA, women's basketball earned a 3.35 GPA and men's basketball came in at 3.16 GPA.

Track and field earned 11 All-American honors at the NAIA National Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala., and followed that up with a 3.28 GPA for the men and a 3.31 GPA for the women.

Mat Lanigan ’09 and Erin Lanigan ’05 were recently featured on KXLH TV, the local CBS affiliate in Helena, discussing their plans to spend the month as a family learning how Family Promise helps homeless families in our community.

For the Lanigan family, the purpose of seeing Family Promise's process first hand is, in part, to help their kids develop empathy for others. The second purpose, says Mat, is showing how the organization brings the community together.

Indianapolis Colts special teams coach, Tom McMahon ‘92, was recently in Helena as part of his annual summer visit to Montana. As a favor to his brother, Dick McMahon ‘93, quarterbacks coach at Capital High, he spent a few hours at a coach’s clinic working with the Bruins' kickoff return, coverage and kicking teams.
