Carroll Theatre Performances for Spring 2022

Student working on theater set

HELENA – Carroll College Theatre is producing two world premiere productions this spring as well as hosting several events for the community.

  • The Hijabis by Rohina Malik runs February 17 through 27, 2022. Best friends Maya, Nadia and Leen are doing their best to live their mid-20s dreams in the small town of Payneville, Illinois.  And while life after college isn’t what any of them expected, they remain united in their struggles by their love for ice cream, their penchant for laughter, and their commitment to wearing their hijabs as a reflection of their faithfulness to God. But when their local mosque is desecrated by other members of the Payneville community, how they choose to respond will change the course of their lives. Associate Professor Kim Shire will direct. This production is part of a series of plays commissioned by Big Bridge Theatre Consortium on the topic of interfaith dialogue. Tickets available now at www.carroll.edu/theatre.

  • Unveiled by Rohina Malik on February 28 at 7 pm. Rohina Malik, author of Yasmina’s Necklace and The Hijabis, will perform her critically-acclaimed solo show Unveiled. In this incredibly topical one-woman show, Rohina plays five Muslim women navigating complex social issues in a post 9/11 world. A "terrific show... intellectually engrossing work of theater" - Nina Metz, Chicago Tribune. "Rohina's little masterpiece will further open our eyes" - Alan Bresloff, Steadstyle Chicago.  Free performance with donations accepted at the door.

  • Stop Thief by Carlyle Moore March 22 at 7 pm. This is part of Carroll’s 100th Anniversary play reading series. The play was performed at Carroll by the Drama Club in November 1921. Described as a “Farcical Fact in Three Acts,” the play begins with a well-to-do family in the midst of wedding preparations. The fun begins as a new maid arrives and items in the house start disappearing. Adjunct Professor Julia Harris will direct. Free performance with donations accepted at the door.

  • Carroll Cabaret: April 2 at 7 pm, tickets are $30. The theatre club will be putting on a Cabaret Fundraiser for the theatre department. It will feature several staff members and some community members as well as students. A night of performances coupled with silent auction items and hors d’oeuvres will be a fun night of raising funds to pay for new lights and a sound board for the theatre department.

  • Mimeprov: Carroll College Mimeprov has been back for the first time since the pandemic this year, and they’re looking better than ever in the spring of 2022! Come join us in the FLEX Theatre for monthly performances where you the audience get to play a part in the show! It’s fast-paced, witty fun for everyone, led by none other than legend of stage and screen, Mokey McNeilly! Our first show is February 19 at 4:30 pm. Free event.

  • Maria and the Butterflies by Katherine Gee Perrone with score by Dana Cardon runs April 21 through May 1, 2022. This world premier play was commissioned by Carroll College Theatre to tell the story of Maria Sibylla Merian, a painter and scientist from the 1600s who studied and illustrated the metamorphosis of bugs and butterflies. This hour-long play will be entertaining for all ages. We will host audiences for school day matinees as well as weekend performances for the public. Associate Professor Kim Shire will direct. Tickets available now at www.carroll.edu/theatre.

  • Puppet Puppet Slam Slam: May 7 at 8 pm. In conjunction with the Puppet Slam Network and The Myrna Loy, Carroll College Theatre will be producing a puppet slam performance combining the works of local theatre professionals such as Kevin Casey and Ilgaz Ulusoy Casey with the performances of local students for a fun evening of puppet-filled storytelling. Free performance with donations accepted at the door.
