Carroll Seaching for Friendship Families for International Students
Dear Helena Community,
Carroll College is looking for potential friendship families for our international students on campus. Some of these students are seeking degrees and some are here for a semester or academic year.
What is a Friendship Family?
Friendship Families is a program which links new international students with individuals or families in the Helena community. The goal of the program is to promote international understanding and friendship, develop an appreciation of how others live and view the world, and assist new students in the process of adjustment to Carroll College, Helena, Montana and the United States.
Friendship Families range from large families with children, single parents, young couples, retirees and singles. All families are local volunteers interested in cultural exchange and are willing to dedicate their time and energy to building a friendly relationship throughout a student’s stay at Carroll College.
What is expected of the Friendship Family?
Friendship families provide a “home experience away from home” for students whose families are often very far away. Our goal is to introduce international students to a local family who will befriend them, introduce them to the local community, support their experience at Carroll College, and enjoy the opportunity for cultural exchange. Friendship Families is a non-residential program. There is no expectation that the Friendship Family provide room and board. Instead, we ask that Friendship Families:
- Invite their international student to their home, on occasion, to participate in a community-based, family experience – perhaps share a meal
- Invite their international student on outings, as seems appropriate. These could include children’s school plays and performances, hikes and picnics, holiday celebrations, local events, etc.
- Attempt to attend their international student’s on-campus events and activities when appropriate
- Mutually decide, together with their international student, the types of activities they might enjoy together
All incoming international students will be offered the opportunity to be matched with a Friendship Family. This is entirely optional for students, and we do not know how many will choose to be matched.
If you are interested in participating in this Friendship Family program please request an application, via email, from Shannon Ackeret, Assistant Director, Global Education at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Feel free to call (406) 447-4469 with questions.
Thank you for considering this opportunity.
