Making the Cut

Congratulations to Carroll’s own Dr. Carson Cunningham, who was recently named to the Helena IR’s annual "20 under 40: The business leaders that are leading Helena to the future" special issue.

Not only is Carson entering his third year as the head basketball coach for the Carroll men’s basketball team, he also teaches history at Carroll and has written four books. Carson has successfully turned around a program which posted a winning record of 18-12 last season after only winning two games the year before he took over the program. He may also be one of the most well-educated coaches in the coaching ranks for he holds a Ph.D. in history from Purdue University and an MBA from DePaul University.

Carson also has friends in high places having brought both legendary Purdue basketball coach Gene Keady and current Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens to campus for coaching clinics and speaking engagements.

He is a dynamic mix of smarts, wit, compassion and likeability wrapped into one package. Carroll is fortunate to have Carson and we congratulate him on this very well-deserved honor.

The 20 under 40 awards are meant to honor those who, through their industry and hard work, are moving the Helena community forward. The winners of this award, nominated by citizens of Helena and the surrounding valley, are those in our community who work beyond themselves and do truly amazing things.

Saints Represent

In addition to Coach Cunningham, Carroll alumni were once again well represented in the annual Helena IR’s "20 under 40: The business leaders that are leading Helena to the future" special issue.

Adding to the five Carroll graduates that were honored last year, two Carroll graduates were selected this year for their exceptional work in the Helena community.

Congratulations Tom McGree ’00, commercial loan officer for First Interstate Bank and Matt Elsaesser ‘02, city commissioner for the City of Helena!

Gearing Up for College

Carroll was one of four Montana colleges and learning institutes which hosted a Montana GEAR UP Academic Summer Camp.

Carroll’s “Preserving the Planet” camp focused on the preservation of the world and its cultures through an investigation of indigenous societies in Montana and throughout the world and the conservation of the environment.

As part of the 7-day camp, 24 kids from Montana’s Indian reservations visited the barn at Youth Dynamics to learn about horses through Carroll’s anthrozoology program. Instructors included Dr. Marie Suthers, professor of anthrozoology, as well as anthrozoology student volunteers.

One of the activities involved painting one of the Dr. Suthers’ horses, Scarlet, in war paint. The colors and symbols all have meaning. The circle around the horse's eye is for alert vision while the blue color symbolizes wisdom and confidence.

Montana GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is funded through a U.S. Department of Education grant and serves to encourage and provide resources to schools, students and their families to make postsecondary education possible for all Montana students, regardless of economic background. The summer camps serve to introduce high school and middle school students to some of Montana’s colleges as well as help them acquire skills and confidence to achieve college readiness.

Matz Moves On

Dr. Brian Matz, associate professor of theology, has accepted a position at Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri, for the fall of 2015. He has received an amazing offer to become the CSJ Chair of Catholic Thought, an endowed chair with a research agenda attached.

We are all most excited for Dr. Matz and will miss his presence on the Carroll campus and in the Helena community greatly.

Brian has served at Carroll for seven years, now. While here, he's published three books and a number of articles, has received four prestigious research fellowships, and has given of himself greatly in the classroom. He has left an important mark on Carroll's Department of Theology and will no doubt do the same for Fontbonne.

Good luck Brian, and we offer you a heartfelt goodbye!

Suthers Serves as Keynote Speaker

Professor of anthrozoology, Dr. Marie Suthers, kept herself busy this summer attending and keynoting several conferences across the country.

She began by attending the International Society for Anthrozoology Conference in Saratoga Springs, New York, July 7-9, where she served as room moderator for the section on wild horses. She followed that up with the American Veterinary Medical Association Convention in Boston July 10-14.

Dr. Suthers was the Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award keynote speaker. She delivered the keynote in honor of the award recipient Dr. Bess Pierce, who is currently battling breast cancer. Dr. Pierce is the director of CENTAUR, the Center for Animal-Human Relationships that Dr. Suthers founded and directed at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech from 1999-2006.
