May 15-16, 2021, Carroll College PE Center
After much deliberation, I wanted to share with you changes we have made to commencement plans for the class of 2020. After initially announcing the rescheduled date of December 12, 2020, we received considerable feedback and concern from our seniors about this timing. Much of the feedback centered around winter travel concerns and potential conflicts with graduate school.
A committee, including student representatives from the senior class, has been formed to address commencement planning. The committee evaluated other potential dates suggested by the senior class including Homecoming weekend and Fall Break. While both of those dates received serious consideration, our overwhelming concern was that we really don’t know when it will be considered safe to gather in large groups again and we didn’t want to select a date that due to circumstances outside of our control would once again require us to reschedule.
We are committed to gathering together to mark the well-earned milestone of your graduation from Carroll College. We determined that the best option will be to celebrate our class of 2020 in May of 2021. We felt the date of May 16, 2021, provides us with the safest window to plan for a celebration without threat of another postponement. This date will allow us to integrate much of the traditional programming surrounding graduation such as baccalaureate Mass and commencement ceremonies in the PE Center. The senior representatives of the class of 2020 asked that the class of 2021’s graduation not be impacted adversely by this rescheduling. Subsequently, Saturday, May 15, remains exclusively reserved for the class of 2021’s graduation festivities while Sunday, May 16, will be the day we celebrate the class of 2020. Given the circumstances, we envision fewer graduates will be able to attend. Therefore, we anticipate allowing each student more than the eight tickets previously allotted for the class of 2020 for the commencement ceremony in the PE Center. I have also confirmed the Chair of the Board of Trustees and the Bishop are also available to be with us on May 16.
Thank you, Carroll College class of 2020, for your resiliency, your thoughtfulness, your understanding, and your sacrifice. We certainly look forward to May 16, 2021, when we can all gather together again on our beautiful campus and celebrate you and all of your accomplishments. In fact, it will mark a perfect “One Year Reunion” for the class of 2020!
John E. Cech, Ph.D.

The Commencement ceremony for the Carroll College Class of 2020 will be held in May 2021. A list of graduation events is included below. More details will be announced as they become available.
Cassie E. Hall, Registrar
2020 Commencement Calendar
Due to fire code regulations at the Carroll PE Center, guest tickets are required for the Commencement ceremony. Graduates will be issued eight (8) guest tickets each and do not need a ticket for themselves. All tickets are free and are not required for children under two years. Doors to the PE Center will open May 15-16, 2021 TBD, and seating preference is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Because of limited capacity in the Cathedral, admission to Baccalaureate is also by ticket only. Each graduate is issued two (2) tickets for family members or guests; tickets grant admission to the main level of the Cathedral but do not guarantee a seat since space is extremely limited. Additional seating is set up in the lower level of the Cathedral in the Brondel Center, where the Mass will be simulcast and Communion will be distributed. Doors to the Cathedral open at 8:30 a.m.
Commencement tickets and Baccalaureate tickets will be distributed at cap and gown pick-up. Students are encouraged to work with their classmates to offer and request extra tickets from those not using all of their allotted numbers.
An overflow viewing area for Commencement will be available in the Hunthausen Activity Center, just adjacent to the PE Center, where the Commencement ceremony will be broadcast via live webcast. In addition, the ceremony will be available online. Details and the online viewing link will be posted on this Commencement webpage as soon as they are available. The Cathedral will also offer an overflow viewing area and simulcast for Baccalaureate.
Cap and Gown Distribution
May 2021 | TBD
O'Connell Hall Lobby & Conference Rooms
Pick up your cap, gown, hood, Baccalaureate tickets, Commencement tickets, brunch tickets (link for purchasing online will be available March 2nd), and line-up number. At this time, you may bring items for the class time capsule. Smaller mementos like your ID cards, name tags, and photos are best because space is limited.
Be sure you have submitted your graduate survey (link coming soon), completed your financial aid exit interview and cleared all bills (parking tickets, library fines, Wellness Center charges, student account payments, etc.) beforehand.
May 15-16, 2021 | TBD, PE Center
Come learn all of the details for Commencement Day. You will also practice lining up, processing in, and walking across the stage. Rehearsal is mandatory for all graduates.
May 15-16, 2021 | TBD, PE Center Event Room
Join your classmates for the President's Toast to the Class of 2020, followed by the Unveiling of Bricks. This event will begin in the PE Center Event Room and will move to the Alumni Walk near St. Al's. Graduates will also fill their class time capsule. Families and special guests are invited.
May 15-16, 2021 | TBD, Cathedral of St. Helena
Graduates assemble on the south lawn of the Cathedral at 9:30 a.m. In case of inclement weather, a rain plan will be announced. Immediately following Mass, graduates will proceed to the front steps of the Cathedral for a class photograph. Baccalaureate guest seating is by ticket only.
May 15-16, 2021 | TBD, St. Thomas Aquinas Commons (dining hall), Campus Center
Commencement Brunch for graduates, families, and guests is offered at the Carroll College dining hall. Tickets are $16.50 each, with children age 10 and under, charged $10 (and graduates are free!). All tickets need to be picked up by the graduate during cap and gown pick-up. No charge for graduates.
May 15-16, 2021 | TBD, PE Center
Degree candidates will assemble in the Great Hall of the Hunthausen Activity Center at 1:30 p.m. Commencement seating is by ticket only. Each graduate is issued eight (8) tickets for family members and guests. As a result of offering as many tickets to students as possible, seating is tight and the P.E. Center can get very warm. We have on occasion opened doors to create airflow but this can create cold areas near the doors. Families are encouraged to arrive early to select suitable seats and to dress appropriately. Doors to the PE Center open at 12:30 p.m.
Graduation Sunday Mass
May 15-16, 2021 | TBD, All Saints Chapel
Fr. Marc will lead a special Mass in All Saints Chapel for graduates and their families (and anyone else who wishes to attend). Come gather post-Commencement and worship together!
Helena Photography will be taking a class and individual photographs at graduation. Kevin Hudson, the owner of Helena Photography, will be sending information to graduates and their families about how to order pictures. He can also be contacted via www.helenaphotography.com or (406) 443-1966.
Standard graduation announcements can be ordered at the Carroll Bookstore at the cost of $1.50 each. For personalized graduation announcements, visit jostens.com to place your order.
Families planning to seek lodging in the Helena area should make your reservations as soon as possible. For information about lodging, visit the official Travel Montana website.
Special Seating Accommodations
