What is an Institutional Repository?

The Carroll Scholars institutional repository (IR) collects, preserves, promotes, and provides global access to the scholarly and intellectual output of the institution. Its purpose is to demonstrate the breadth, depth, and impact of Carroll undergraduate and faculty research, provide a record of research output to donors and funding organizations, fulfill open access requirements for grants, and assist in recruiting students to research programs on campus. It is also intended to provide academic departments with additional means for demonstrating the overall value and impact of their student research and learning outcomes to the institution.

Carroll Scholars has grown to include over 7,000 objects from every department at Carroll College. Carroll undergraduate student theses, a key collection, have been digitized and made accessible through Google, Google Scholar, Worldcat, OAIster, ROAR, and other indexing services and referrers. Through Carroll Scholars, Carroll scholarship has been read by over 18,000 readers in 140 countries.

The Carroll Scholars institutional repository creates:

  • A central, easily discoverable place for faculty, students, and departments to showcase, reference and distribute their work
  • A repository for all scholarship produced by members of the college community
  • A means for long term digital preservation of material
  • A digital archives for historic and college-related material
  • A platform for creating and managing new faculty and student publications

 

How does Carroll Scholars help Carroll College?

As a showcase of institutional programs and research output, the Carroll Scholars institutional repository may be used to more effectively demonstrate Carroll programs and experiences (“show” rather than “tell”), and increase Carroll’s and your department’s overall competitiveness and attractiveness to prospective students and parents (and other groups such as granting organizations).

Our goals include making a clearer and richer index of the undergraduate research climate at Carroll College, and creating a body of material that can be used by individual departments to better demonstrate their value and impact.  We would also like to make this material available for admissions, marketing, and administrators to be used in illustrating the nature of the undergraduate research experience and outcomes at Carroll College to prospective students and parents, and to the community at large.

What kinds of works can be deposited in Carroll Scholars?

We look forward to working closely with faculty and students at Carroll in identifying material for inclusion in the IR, including your own published and unpublished work, material from your department, and selected undergraduate student works such as theses, SURF presentations, and any exemplary capstone or student research projects that you elect to nominate for inclusion.  In later stages, we would also like to create infrastructure for housing research data and sharing it both within and without the institution. 

 

Who retains copyright to my work?

Copyright depends on any author agreement you signed with your publisher, and whether that agreement included a transfer of copyright (copyright assignment).  If you no longer hold copyright to your work, or you are unsure, we can work with you to determine whether the terms of your author agreement allow deposit in an institutional repository, and otherwise obtain permission from the publisher to do so.  In the majority of cases, academic publishers will allow deposit in an institutional repository after an embargo period.  Carroll Scholars does not require any transfer of copyright, only permission from the copyright holder of the work to include the work in the repository and make it publicly available for download.

 

Who may download my work? Are there options for access control or embargo?

Two options currently exist for work uploaded to Carroll Scholars: “open access”, and “embargoed”.  “Open Access” indicates that a work may be read and downloaded by anyone, but may not be sold, redistributed, or altered--as the author, you retain copyright to your work.  “Embargoed” places your work in the repository, but makes it inaccessible until after a designated date, e.g. five years in the future from the date of deposit.  We can also accept special requests, including collections that need access to be restricted to on-campus or to certain individuals.
