K. Mike Franklin, EdD, LCPC
Director of Counseling Services
and Gracie... "Carroll's K-9 Comforter No. 1"

Carroll College Counselor Mike Franklin

Mike is in his ninth year as Director of Counseling Services at Carroll College and loves it more each year. After working with young adults for his entire career, he finds his current interactions with students to be his favorite. He enjoys working with students in helping them cope with difficult mental and emotional situations; and helping them transition from adolescents to young adults… from living at home to living independently… from an initial idea of who and what they want to be to a more focused, grounded knowledge of themselves.

Mike's faithful companion, Gracie, goes to work with him everyday... meets and greets students, goes to classes and meetings with him, is the most well known beast on campus, and loves dog treats.

Mike's educational background includes an Engineering Degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, a Master of Divinity Degree from Duke University, a Master of Sacred Theology from Yale University, and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University in Sarasota. He is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.

Prior to coming to Carroll, Mike served as a United Methodist Pastor and a Navy Chaplain for 18 years. Though Mike hails from southern Montana (small geographic area known as South Carolina), he has lived in eleven different States and in the Republic of Panama. Mike served two years in Her Majesty's Royal Navy in England as an exchange officer with Great Britain. He taught at the undergraduate level prior to coming to Carroll and currently teaches an Alpha Seminar class in the fall and a psychology class, Emotional Intelligence, in the spring.

Mike is married to Georgia Lovelady, and they enjoy hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking, reading, and hanging out with friends. He is active in the Bankrupt Brain Trust and the Hauser Boulevard Literary Society, and volunteers with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and the Cathedral of St. Helena.

Megan Patrick-Thompson, MA, LCPC

Associate Director of Counseling Services

Megan is looking forward to her third year at Carroll and is exciting for yet another great year!  She is a graduate of Carroll College, class of 2004. After completing her Bachelors in Psychology, she moved to California to pursue her Masters in Clinical Psychology. She is currently working on her Ph.D and all she has left is the dreaded doctoral dissertation. Megan is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.

Of Megan's various counseling experiences, her favorite was working with college students in San Diego, CA.   She is excited to continue that work here at Carroll College. What she likes most about working with this age group is getting the watch their metamorphosis from adolescence into adulthood. She feels that Carroll was an enormous influence on her own development and she is looking forward to helping Carroll students with their own journeys.

When Megan's not at work, she says that you can find her hiking, cross- country skiing, kayaking and taming her two miniature dachshunds (ooh... sounds ferocious!) with her husband, Judd.

Kyrie Russ, MS

Carroll College Counseling Intern Kyrie Russ

Counselor

Kyrie is very excited to return for her second year in the Wellness Center. She recently completed her Master’s in Counseling degree from the University of Great Falls. She received her undergraduate degree in Human Development from Montana State University and went on to receive a Masters in Adult Education from Buffalo State College in New York.

Kyrie has spent much of her working life helping young families and teen parents develop positive parenting skills while achieving their own personal goals. As a counselor, she is especially interested in helping clients reduce anxiety and develop a positive self-image as they navigate major life transitions, such as entering college.

Kyrie is a small-town Montana native. She recently moved back to the Helena area after living on the East coast while her husband served in the military. She is the mother of two fabulous daughters, a four year old and a 5 month old, which provide plenty of daily adventures and lots of questions (“but WHY mommy?”). In her free time, she loves to read just about anything, sing, travel to new places, and watch Seinfeld re-runs, among other things.
