What If God Was One of Us?

October 24, 2004

The lyrics of “What if God was one of us…” plays as images of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandella, the Dali Lama and others flash on the screen. The opening sequence of the CBS Friday night television show, Joan of Arcadia, always gives me pause. What if God was one of us?

If God was a student at Carroll, would His Holiness be on the core team for FOCUS? Would God be a Kirchen Minister? Would God be a Student Ambassador? Would God go to parties? Which parties would God go to? How much would God drink or let His friends drink? Would God paint his face and be a Carroll Crazy at a home football games? Would God go on a service trip? Would God volunteer with the Big Brother/Big Sister program? Would God lend you His lecture notes for the class that you skipped?

If God was a student at Carroll, would He workout every morning? You would almost expect Him to treat His body as a temple. Would God have a girlfriend? Or a boyfriend? When God wanted to be intimate, what would He do? Would the Divine Presence complain about the food at the St. Thomas Aquinas Dining Hall? Would God study in the library? Would God waste His time playing video games? Would God be an activist trying to save the world, get out the vote, or support fundraisers for research to cure AIDS? Would God find value in having ROTC on our campus? Would God ignore or listen to the Holy Spirit?

If each of us has a bit of God in us, God can be doing all of these things at Carroll. If the God in us wanted to speak to the God in others, what would He say?

Are we ready to listen to Him when He speaks through one of us?
