spring 2007 meeting 1

ASCC Senate Minutes January 28th 2007

Meeting began at 8:08 p.m.

Roll Call

Dr. Trebon reflects on Carroll College and the purpose for meeting with students and Student Government:

Welcome and Introductions

Hard to keep in touch with students and these meetings are important for that reason. (Presidents responsibility to listen and talk with the students)

What is going well, and not so well – What is on your mind – information I can bring to Senior Staff.

Notes on What is going Well: Comments from Students:

Ø Great professors and teachers. It is very good that students are involved in the hiring/ selection process when looking at new teachers. Over all praise of those who work at Carroll.

Ø Good diversity at our college for a place like Helena Mt.

Ø Teachers are very good at keeping track of the students, they know when you have missed class and call you and ask why. (this does not happen at other colleges) * For this reason many students make college their full time job and do not take on jobs themselves. (only 3 hands went up when asked: “How many people work 20 hours or more in jobs outside of Carroll?”

Ø The new C.A.’s are Excellent! The Senate believes we will see an increase in the number of freshman and students returning because of the C.A.’s relationship with the students.

Patrick’s Comment:

When the C.A.’s were chosen we got together and talked about what makes Carroll special. They said that the feeling of family and caring for one another created a wonderful learning space not only in the class room but also outside the classroom.

They felt that we were losing this feeling. I told them that it was tradition that the juniors and especially the seniors took the responsibility of teaching the freshman what family meant at Carroll. I said at Carroll we do not take advantage of one another and it was up to the older brothers and sisters of the family to teach appropriate behavior to the freshman and sophomores. They said they wanted to take on that role as C.A’s

The meaning behind our actions would be love. - I think they have done this well.

As far as enrollment, if you want to sell Carroll College you have to sell the soul of who we are. Parents want to hear that the professors call if they don’t show up for class. Students want to know they are going to be a part of a family and be a part of something special outside the class room as well as inside the class room. Talk to the students – they will tell you why Carroll is special - This year would be a great year to ask them. Everyone is very happy right now.

Notes on What is Not going Well: Comments from Students:

Ø They did not have a lot to say – mostly happy

Questions and Comments: TQ = Trebon’s Question SQ = Student’s Question.

S.Q. What avenues are we pursuing to get the pressure off of student tuition?

  1. We need to make sure we spend money correctly. We should ask the question about all our spending “is it central to the college?” If not, then why are we doing it? We are about education. We need to be very efficient.
  2. We need to look at what are the new programs we can bring in to change that 93% of college is paid for by tuition/room/board
  3. We need to look for funding outside of the college. Endowment needs to have a better return. We need donations. The title 3 grant that I.T. applied for will help transform that area of Carroll College.
  4. 28 million in endowments now and we have a goal of 100 million – is this realistic? – Yes.
  5. When I arrived I said 4 things need to happen: Increased tuition, decreased discount rate, increased enrollment, and raised dollars.

S.Q. What is the first step in assuring students stay at Carroll?

You tell me – Why do you stay? (see what is going well) We do know that people who are involved stay. Example: Athletics. Clubs are an area where people can get involved – What are clubs doing? Promote club events.

S.Q. What can we do? (Senate, and ASCC, students) What would you want us to do in the role that we play at Carroll?

Be Leaders – Get people involved – Be vocal – Let people know how great Carroll is and do all you can to improve Carroll. Get faculty and staff involved with what you are doing.

The ASCC Student Government is more active and gets more done now than when I first arrived. You are doing a good job and you are effective.

S.Q. Over your 5 years of being here are you happy with the direction we have gone as a college?

Yes as far as the deficit I arrived to. We have done a good job of cutting the deficit

No on wanting to raise more money.

Comment: It has been a great year at Carroll as far as students being happy.

We ask these questions of student government at every meeting:

  1. What keeps you at Carroll College?
  2. Is there any issue that would cause you to leave Carroll?

Dr. Trebon's closing comments:

We need to celebrate more. It would be good to add students to our planning for the Centennial Celebration.

I appreciate your involvement in student government and appreciate the opportunity to meet with you.

Meeting Adjourned at 8:55 p.m.

Patrick’s added comments:

During introductions we talked a little bit about service – it was a side comment. I was amazed to hear how many students are doing some kind of volunteer service either connected with or not connected with their major or area of interest. I have 15 students in the student activities area right now and out of curiosity I asked if they do some kind of volunteer service. Every single one of them does. It was much the same on the night Dr. Trebon visited.

Chad and I are finding out that the floor projects are not going as well as we hoped. The floors that were allowed to pick their service project are doing much better then the floors that were given a service. As a matter of fact, those who got to choose are the only ones still participating. Chad and Heather have worked hard on organizing and planning of these floor service projects but the reality is that students want to choose their service. They are also more interested in service projects that are one time events. This allows them to pick one – do it – look at their schedule and then move on to pick the next one.

The “Up Till Dawn” (Raising money for St. Jude’s) project has proven this to be true. We have over 300 students volunteering for this project. Over 2500 letters were sent out. We have come to the understanding that these are the projects that get students involved in volunteering. They are family orientated, they invite faculty and staff in to the project, they fit well into the spirit of Carroll as a caring community, and create a feeling of making a difference.

We know that many students do not take on jobs because Carroll professor’s demand hard work from the students. We know the students have very busy schedules. If we make volunteering a mandatory event on the floors they are going to be less likely to get involved with the floor project. In contrast when we offer a variety of volunteer opportunities like the St. Jude’s Program then they will get involved. Many of our students volunteer in projects connected to their major or life interest. Almost all the students are doing volunteer work. The only way we are going to get the number of hours they have volunteered is by asking them. Chad and Heather do a great job of offering opportunities for service. The truth is that there is so much more service going on outside of the opportunities Carroll offers.

Money making idea: Have Carroll students send out letters like the St. Jude Program. I can not believe how much money they have raised.

a. ASCC Spring 2007 Goals:
1. Raise interest in and create a new vision for the Outdoor Club! –Looking for a good group of leaders. Krister, Taylor, and Chad Gray are looking to raise an interest in the Outdoor Club, and to use it as a way to bring in new students. Would like to have a group of trained and certified leaders.
2. Raise interest in ASCC Executive Board Elections –Elections will be in March with the Programming Board’s. After Spring Break on the 21st. Campaign week will be the 12th-20th. Would like the Senate to help (with running or recruiting). Idea that multiple voting locations might help with voter turnout. Not everyone goes to the cube. Use the square to vote, or use an online poll. Pizza with the candidates (question and answer session).

4. Continue the endeavor in raising funds and awareness for St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
-To also address problems with drugs on campus. The students and CAs are unaware of how to handle such situations- Missouri River Drug Counseling. ASCC should help spread awareness. Drug policy is being re-written in student handbook.
b. Health Services Club Presentation - Took a trip to West Africa and started a children’s library.
