Dr. Trebon reflects on Carroll College and the purpose for meeting with students and Student Government:

Welcome and Introductions

Hard to keep in touch with students and these meetings are important for that reason. (Presidents responsibility to listen and talk with the students)

What is going well, and not so well – What is on your mind – information I can bring to Senior Staff.

Notes on What is going Well: Comments from Students:

Ø Carroll is a great College, small classes, and you are not just a number. Feels very family orientated

Ø Mostly small class number situation

Ø Lots of involvement outside of class, clubs, volunteering, intern.

Ø Teachers, Faculty, and Staff actually care about our education and our lives. (not for school but for life) They create meaningful and caring relationships with us.

Ø Student appreciate that Faculty and Staff are not 9 to 5 people, but work lots of over time and spend time with them

Question: What is Carroll’s Promise to You?

Ø To teach us to grasp what we want – it takes work and spirit

Ø A well rounded education that is about learning but also about growing as an individual.

Ø We are taught by great professors who are interesting and excellent teachers. Who are also interested in us.

Ø The opportunity to grow as a person and the ability to think for ourselves. (came to Carroll because of a mailing)

Ø An education that allows us “to get the job” (nursing dept student)

Notes on What is Not going Well: Comments from Students:

Ø They did not have a lot to say – mostly happy

Ø See email to Dr. Trebon sent the day after (about making dorms feel more homey – not like a “hospital”, or institution – dorms more like home with some fun recreation or living room space in each dorm.

Questions and Comments: TQ = Trebon’s Question SQ = Student’s Question.

T.Q. Who is in a class of more then 50? Many hands went up (General Psyc, Biology, U.S. History, History of Film, Gender Relations…

T.Q. Who is in a class of around 10? About ½ the hands went up.

S.Q. What do students do when they are concerned about a teacher not teaching well – tenure or not?

Talk to the Chair Person of the Dept. or Talk to your Advisor. or Talk to the Academic V.P – Talk to one of these people in confidentiality and be specific about what the problems seem to be. There is a system in place to review performances. Students have the right to expect an excellent education and good teachers.

S.Q. You said there is a system in place, what is it?

It would be informal to begin with to gather information and it would go from there - Bottom line: Talk to one of the people suggested so an evaluation can take place.

The Future of Carroll College:

S.Q. What does the future look like for Carroll College?

Answer in the form of final remarks – only 5 min left.

Three Major Challenges:

  1. Improvements of Programs that help us retain students. Example: Outdoor club putting on more Outdoor Events = the reason people came here in the first place was “yes” for the college, but also for the environment which they live in. We also need to get students involved, clubs, community service; so on #1 retention group is Athletics because they are involved and have a commitment. This also means from the Academic side that we need to look at Environmental studies, and Internships. Things that help us celebrate where we are. Possibly look into graduate type classes.
  2. Enrollment – To get them here and keep them here. Looking at Academic quality, again programs, and what we do and can offer as a unique college. Academic buildings, Fine Arts Center, Athletic Space for students,
  3. Bring money in to increase our endowment and scholarship funding. Go out and get money for Carroll College so we do not rely on student tuition. More scholarship monies, (We do not get state funds and we compete with State colleges for dollars – it is hard)

Thank you from the Students to Dr. Trebon

We very much appreciate the time you take to listen to us and to talk with us.

Meeting adjourned at 8:05 with the Senate arriving for their meeting.

Notes submitted by Patrick Harris,
