Thursday, April 24, 7pm, SH 101/202 “Studying Super Earths”

Using new techniques, astronomers have discovered thousands of planets which orbit around other nearby stars.  The most interesting of these planets are larger than the Earth, and so we call them super-Earths.  We don’t have anything like them in our solar system.  The Earth is the largest of the inner planets, and the other planets in our solar system are gas giants, more than ten times the mass of the Earth.  What would these planets look like, up close?  What sorts of atmospheres would you find on a planet with double or triple the mass of the Earth.  Could life have formed on any of these planets?  Join us for an exploration of the newly discovered super Earths!
