Helpful Hints for High School Juniors
Take a Challenging Academic Curriculum
You have probably already heard this one - but it's important! The classes that you take your junior and senior year are important for a couple of reasons. The admission committee looks at all the classes you take in high school, but your junior and senior year classes show what kind of student you are now and what kind of student you aspire to be in the future. More importantly, by taking a challenging curriculum in high school, you will be prepared for the academic rigors of college. If you take a less challenging curriculum in high school, you will not be prepared for the academic rigors of college. At Carroll, we strongly recommend a college-preparatory curriculum. The following is a suggested list of classes for four years of high school:
English - 4 years
Mathematics - 3 years, including Algebra II
Social Studies - 3 years, including US History and US Government
Science - 2 years, including one lab science
Foreign Language - 2 years
Fine Arts - 2 years
Technology - 1 year
Register and Prepare for ACT or SAT
We recommend students take either the ACT or SAT the spring of the junior year and then again in the fall of their senior year. Research from both testing agencies show that students that dedicate ten or more hours seriously preparing for the test do considerably better.
