Who Would Ever Want A Charlie Horse?

April 01, 2008

You would be surprised how coveted a Charlie Horse can be here at Carroll . . . And I don't mean the kind that suddenly attack your muscles without warning.

On Thursday March 27th Carroll College student activities held their 4th Annual Charlie's Film Festival. A time where Carroll students who have submitted films no longer than 15 minutes long show up for a night of laughter, tears, and Charlie Horses. It's like the Oscar's only way less budgeted and it's not televised.

It was an entertaining evening to say the very least. Why did I attend you may ask? Besides being kind of a movie fanatic I was nominated for an award . . . if you must know best actress, for my portrayal of a troubled young Bohemian girl who dies without knowing it and comes back as a ghost who haunts her tribe and the Austrians who were invading. The name of the film was PolchaHauntUs. I guess it could be described as a dark comedy . . . but really I was the only thing creepy about it.

The top four movies are shown at the awards and PolchaHauntUs just happened to be in the top four...which means anyone who showed up to the awards saw me in my creepiness to the extreme. Really it's a funny movie with the exception of the creepy twisted version of "Colors of the Wind."

Yes that's right it was a musical. We sang songs from Pochantas the Disney version except Travis the director/creator/writer changed all the songs to be sung to polka music.

Since the awards, I have had several random people approach me to tell me that I'm scary. I'm really not! In fact I like to think of myself as a nice person . . . one of the other nominees after the awards turned around to see me and actually took a step back saying "whoa."

I'm sure you are all dying to know what I looked like and below there is a picture of the movie poster. So look if you must.

Moral of today: If you want to be noticed be in a Charlie's movie, be really scary looking. If you want people to not be afraid of you, don't be a scary person in the Charlie's . . . in fact be a sweet loving character, you're more approachable and people won't avoid making eye contact with you on campus. (This last part was just a joke, nobody has avoided eye contact with me . . . they're probably just avoiding me all together.)

Peace,

Kelly Ruby
