Help Topics

This guide is intended to help you locate library resouces in the Library Catalog, including books, dvds, and ebooks. It also provides a brief overview of the Advanced Search feature.

Find Books

Additional search options are available when you click the "More Options" button to the right of the search box at the top of the page.

  1. "Advanced Search" will take you to an advanced search screen. If you are unfamiliar with advanced search, a librarian can assist you with this.

This interface is designed to help you find books in the Library Catalog.

  1. Begin by entering your search terms into the "white box" (1).
  2. The dropdown at (2) for college will let you choose which college’s holdings you wish to search. Several Montana academic libraries' catalogs are available. Leave it on Carroll College, unless you know that you wish to search the catalog of another institution.
  3. The dropdown at (3) will let you choose how your search terms will be treated. Words or phrase, author, title, subject, series, journal title, and ISBN are all available options.
    • Words or phrase will search for your terms anywhere in the record.
    • Author will search for your terms as all or part of an author’s name.
    • Title will search for your terms in the title of the record only.
    • Subject will search for your terms as a Library of Congress Subject Heading.
    • Series will search for your terms in the series title of the record only.
    • Journal title will search for the title of a journal that Carroll College Library has in print (most of our journals are electronic). This will search for a specific journal publication. To search for articles by topic, use the tab for "Find Articles".
    • ISBN will search by an International Standard Book Number (ISBN).
    • Please ask a librarian for further assistance.
  4. The check boxes (4) at the bottom will let you choose to search for print books, electronic books, or everything (default everything).
  5. Advanced search (5) will take you to the advanced search screen in the Library Catalog.
  6. Not finding the book you are looking for? The WorldCat button (6) on the right will let you search for any book in libraries worldwide, including Carroll. You may then request the book through interlibrary loan.
  7. Click Search (7)
  8. You will be taken to a list of search results in the Library Catalog.
  9. Click on the title of an item of interest (9) to view the catalog record.
  10. The catalog number (10) on the record indicates where the book is shelved. For assistance in locating a book, please see the front desk.
  11. If it is an ebook, there will be a link (11) on the record leading to the ebook. Click here for help with the catalog
  12. To go back, click "go back" on the red bar near the top middle of the page.
  13. To begin a new search, click "new search" on the red bar near the top middle of the page, or begin a new search from the library homepage.

 

Find DVDs

Advanced Search

    • Subsequent "white boxes" and dropdown menus allow you to specify additional search terms.
  4. The dropdowns for AND OR NOT (4) are used for boolean searching, and specify the relationship between terms. For example, "Lincoln AND Washington" would search for records where both names appear. "Jaguar NOT Car" would search for the animal, not the automobile. "Greece OR Rome" would search for records where either term appears. Please ask a librarian for further assistance with boolean searching.
  5. The dropdown for language (5) lets you specify the language of the book or other work.
  6. The dropdown for type (6) lets you specify the type of material you are looking for.
  7. Pubyear (7) lets you search for a particular year of publication.

Ebooks

Quick reference:

This guide is intended to help you find ebooks in the Library Catalog.

  1. Search for books in the Library Catalog as you would normally. Alternatively, use the checkbox to search for ebooks only.
  2. Click the link on the record (2). What you see next will vary depending on whether the book is available through one of two providers, EBSCOhost or Ebrary.
  3. For EBSCOhost:On the left side of the screen, click on "eBook Full Text" (3) to view the book online.
  4. You may also download the book to view it offline. This process involves several steps:
    1. You will need several things before you begin.
      • You will be required to register for an Ebsco id.
      • You will need an Adobe id. Visit www.adobe.com/go/gn_your_account, and click on "Create an Adobe Account".
      • You will need to download and install Adobe Digital Editions. If you are on an iPad, you will instead need to install the Bluefire Reader app.
      • You will need to link Adobe Digital Editions to your Adobe id. If using Bluefire Reader in iPad, you will be prompted to enter your Adobe id the first time the app is run.
    2. Click "Download this eBook" (4).
    3. You will be asked to sign in to your Ebsco Account.
    4. You will be presented with a dialog named "Download this eBook". Select a checkout period (in days) for which you would like to have the book. At the end of this period, you will need to check out the book again to continue using it. While the book is checked out, other Library users will not be able to access the book.
    5. Click "Checkout & Download" when done.
    6. Save and open the file in Adobe Digital Editions, Bluefire Reader, or the Adobe-compatible reader of your choice.
  5. For EBRARY:On the left side of the screen, click on "eBook Full Text" (3) to view the book online.
  6. You may also download the book to view it offline. This process involves several steps:
    1. You will need several things before you begin.
      • You will be required to register for an Ebrary id.
      • You will need an Adobe id. Visit www.adobe.com/go/gn_your_account, and click on "Create an Adobe Account".
      • You will need to download and install Adobe Digital Editions. If you are on an iPad, you will instead need to install the Bluefire Reader app.
      • You will need to link Adobe Digital Editions to your Adobe id. If using Bluefire Reader in iPad, you will be prompted to enter your Adobe id the first time the app is run.
    2. Click "Download"
    3. You may be asked to sign in to your Ebrary Account.
    4. You will be presented with a dialog named "Export and Download". You may:
      • Download a PDF of up to 60 pages for an unlimited time.
      • Download the entire book for a period of up to 14 days.
    5. Save and open the file in Adobe Digital Editions, Bluefire Reader, or the Adobe-compatible reader of your choice.
