Borrowing & Renewal

Please return your library items by Monday, December 14!

Cards

All library users, including faculty, adjunct faculty, staff, full time students, and part time students must have a valid ID with library barcode to check out materials, including all course reserve items. Barcodes are issued at the library.

Members of the General Public must present a valid public or college/university library card, whereupon they will be issued a Carroll library card.

Students

Borrowing

All currently enrolled students may check out books, government documents, and Carroll theses for three weeks, and may renew material for an additional three weeks, either in person, oline, or by telephone. Items on which a hold has been placed may not be renewed.

Students may check out DVDs and Blu-rays for one week.

Students must present a valid, barcoded Carroll College ID card to check out course reserve materials and equipment

Reference materials and periodicals do not circulate.

Fines

Fines for three week loan items are assessed at twenty cents ($.20) per day per item.

Overdue reserve materials, DVDs, and equipment (iPads, laptops, etc.) are subject to fines of two dollars ($2.00) per day per item. Because these materials are in high demand, fines for these materials begin accruing immediately. We do not pro-rate fines -- e.g., if you turn the item in twenty minutes late, you will be charged a $2.00 fine.

If you damage an item beyond repair or you lose an item, you will be billed for the cost to replace the item plus a $25 processing fee and any accrued fines.

You may pay fines at the Circulation Desk with checks (made payable to Corette Library) or cash.

Fines over $5.00 that have not been paid at the library will be sent to the Business Office during the first week of each month, except in September and February. We do this so students can modify their schedules at the beginning of each semester: if you have any amount on unpaid on your account with the Business Office, you will be unable to register for classes or change your class schedule. You will also have your grades, transcripts, and diploma withheld.

All borrowed items must be returned to the Circulation Desk in the Library or deposited in the book drop located on the east side of the lobby.

For additional information contact the staff at the Circulation Desk at 447-4339, or the Circulation Supervisor at  447-4346 or mallen@carroll.edu.

Overdue Items

Here is the process Corette Library follows to notify patrons of overdue items, and retrieve long overdue items that are presumed missing:

1. Student patrons will receive three overdue notices and one final notice. First notices are sent every weekday (Monday through Friday); the second, third, and fourth notices are sent every Wednesday.

  • The first notice is sent one weekday after the item(s) is (are) due.
  • The second notice is sent one day to one week after the first notice.
  • The third notice is sent one week after the second notice.
  • The fourth notice is sent one week after the third notice.
2. The patron has one week to return materials after the fourth notice; otherwise, the patron will receive a billing notice. The billing notice:
  • Warns the patron they will be billed for lost items one week from the date of the billing notice, unless they return the items or contact the Circulation Supervisor to make arrangements.
  • Informs the patron of the consequences of an unpaid balance at the Carroll College Business Office. (See "Fines," above.)
  • Provides an estimate of what is owed (the cost of each item, a $25 processing fee per item, and any accrued fines).
Note: since fines continue to accrue after the first billing notice, the amount sent to the Business Office for collection is usually greater than the estimated total. To see how fines are calculated, see "Fines," above.

3. The patron will receive a final billing notice, with an updated total, the day before the bill is sent to the Business Office.

4. After the bill is sent to the Business Office for collection, we begin the process of replacing the item(s). If items are returned before we replace them, we will forgive the cost of the items and processing fees, but not item fines. If items are returned after we replace them, we will not forgive any amount from your account.

Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff may check out all materials, with the exception of video tapes and DVDs, until the end of the current semester; video tapes, DVDs, and CDs may be borrowed for one week. All materials are subject to recall.

Faculty and staff must present a valid, barcoded Carroll College ID card.

Faculty may check out iPads, laptops, and audiovisual equipment for use in and outside of the library.

Reference materials and periodicals circulate for short periods for special purposes.

All borrowed items must be returned to the Circulation Desk in the Library or deposited in the book drop located on the east side of the lobby.
