Long Range Plan. Goal 2 - Improve access to information

(MA1,3; IC 1,4; ES 1)

  • Objective 1: Review annually the SIRSI system assessing it for necessary hardware and software upgrades and adding any needed additional module/services.

     

    • Task: By October 15 make recommendation on whether to include additional hardware/ software upgrades or new modules/services in the annual budget requests.
    • Task: Look at SIRSI system statistical reports
    • Task: Attend all OMNI meetings
    • Task: Attend SIRSI meetings when possible
  • Objective 2: Increase and replace existing computers as needed.
    • Task: Ensure the building is adequately wired and shielded to support the additional workstations and equipment.
    • Task: Secure adequate funding
    • Task: Hire computer technician on library staff
    • Task: Consult with CCIT
    • Task: Review and assess the needs of new/more computer and equipment annually.
  • Objective 3: Install an operational wide area network (WAN), which would include, but not be limited to, periodical indexes; census information; reference materials; etc. by 2005.
    If CCIT is not able to purchase appropriate hardware/software or if library is not able to make use of such equipment/software then the following tasks will take place:

     

    • Task: Coordinate with CCIT
    • Task: Identify and write grant proposals
    • Task: Secure funds
    • Task: Hire a systems administrator to handle library technology.
    • Task: Select hardware/vendor
    • Task: Purchase necessary licenses
    • Task: Develop instructional materials
    • Task: Select and contract databases
    • Task: Format needed (e.g. CD, on-line)
    • Task: Prepare locally produced databases
  • Objective 4: Staff an information desk with trained personnel 85% of the hours the library is opened by 2006-07.
    • Task: Increase personnel budget
    • Task: Hire additional staff
    • Task: Develop staff schedule
  • Objective 5: Elicit faculty, staff and student input on library services by 2006-07.
    • Task: Convene focus groups of target populations
    • Task: Survey target populations
  • Objective 6: Provide each staff member with the opportunity of attending annually a minimum of one workshop or conference relating to job responsibilities in providing information Expenses will be paid fully by the college’s staff and faculty development funds.
    • Task: Identify workshops and staff attendance
  • Objective 7: complete the retrospective conversion of the collection by the year 2004-05
    • Task: Weed the P collection
    • Task: Recon part of the P and Q collections
    • Task: Identify other books to be reconned via on the fly checkouts and spot-checking shelf list and recon/add to SIRSI
    • Task: Finish weeding the tape collection
    • Task: Catalog using OCLC
    • Task: Add to SIRSI
  • Objective 8: Develop a plan to maintain the integrity of the OPAC data records by 2003-04.
    • Task: Identify the problem areas
    • Task: Implement plan
  • Objective 9: Maintain and upgrade weekly the library’s homepage.
    • Task: Identify areas to be updated
    • Task: Identify pages, links to be added
  • Objective 10: To add the library’s holdings to a Union List of Serials in OCLC by the year 2005.
    • Task: Identify which union list to join
    • Task: Learn the protocols for cataloging and adding titles/holdings to the union list
    • Task: Update inventory information of serials holdings
    • Task: Add holdings and maintain union list
  • Objective 11: Increase library staffing to current ACRL minimal standards by 2005.
  • Objective 12. Install an electronic reserve system by the year 2005.
    • Task: Research systems
    • Task: Research what other small liberal arts college libraries are using and why.
    • Task: Install system
