Corky Romano (PG-13) at the Gaslight

Three stars

All in the Family

By Katherine Northup
Freshman at Helena High

I liked the movie, "Corky Romano." It was a nice piece about the ties between family, friends, and significant others. I liked how Corky (Chris Kattan) fit the exact stereotype of how the media portrays gays, but he was straight. That just goes to show, you can't judge people by how they act or dress. You have to get to know them first.

"Corky Romano" was a fun movie with lots of laughs and a few tears. Corky is an ex-member of the Romano family business; in other words his relatives are part of the Mafia.

Corky had been kicked out of the family, keeping only the family name as a remnant of his past. Following his dreams, Corky found a job as a veterinarian’s assistant. He proved very clumsy, but meant well.

"Pops" Romano (Peter Falk) was in a tight spot. The FBI was gathering evidence to win a lawsuit against the family. Pops found out that one of his men had been leaking information to the FBI. Pops figured that if the FBI was going to send an agent undercover, then the Family should make a move, too by – sending someone undercover to destroy the evidence against the mob. Pops couldn't send his other two sons, Paul and Chris Penn. The FBI already had photos of those two.

The Family finally decides on the least likely person who could get the job done - the outcast son, Corky Romano.

Corky has had a horrible day at work, in which he has opened a snake's cage, shot a cat in the eye with the syringe that was supposed to kill the cat, knocked over the cage and released a bird, and knocked over everything in the room. This is one of the oldest stunts in the world, but never ceases to amuse the audience.

To make a long story shot, though it's probably too late for that, Corky gets sent into the FBI undercover. He isn't assigned to his father’s case, but rather a heroin/murder case. He solves both cases, helps his father, catches the drug dealer, falls in love with Kate Russo (Vinessa Shaw), gets married, and lives happily ever after.

I liked the movie, overall. I would recommend this movie to people of 10 years old and up. Kids that age probably have already heard all the words and seen just about all of the scenes. There aren't any sexual scenes, unless you count some of the photos that the Romano brothers take of bums and breasts. There is, however, a fair amount of violence, but nothing the kids can't handle.

I didn't really want to see this movie at first, but it was a pleasant surprise when I did.

Thanks for your great review. I am sure that all of Carroll will go out and see or not see a movie based on a freshman in high school's responses to the movies. Please tell me you are doing this for a class of yours and it is not something we need to pay attention to. Thanks for all of your time well spent.

Wow, for a moment there I almost thought you were being sarcastic, bubba. ;) I'm sure this is a great kids' movie, and sure, it might show you to get to know people before judging them, but then, it's a movie, and generally people who act like Chris Kattan are probably in need of some serious help and/or a good smack upside the head. He gives a bad name to closet-cases everywhere.

Hey steepndeep!

Did you have to train to be this rude and ignorant, or is it natural talent?

Katherine Northup and her dad Brent (who teaches at Carroll, by the way) get paid to write film reviews for the Helena Independent Record. They and the IR are kind enough to let us see those reviews before they appear in Friday's paper.

So who the heck are you to make smart remarks about their film reviews? If you could write that well as a high school freshman, it sure isn't evident from your posts!

Freedom of speach is a wonderful thing, but it can be easily abused. Your post in this thread is a good example of such abuse. You have absolutely no reason to be so cruel! If the movie Katherine reviews isn't up to your obviously high standards, don't go to see it!

Grow up, already!
