I am not sure which surprised me more - the fact that I couldn't always
follow the movie "Serendipity," or the fact that it was better than I
expected.

Despite the fact sciptwriter Marc Klein told a tale that has been used ever
since movies were invented, he and director Peter Chelsom actually managed to make it worth watching. They lead Sarah Thomas (Kate Beckinsale)and Jon

(John Cusack)on a goose chase to end all goose chases.

The pair of possible soulmates meet at a department store while trying
to buy the same pair of gloves for their current boy and girlfriends.
Sara and the thunderstruck Jon go out for hot cocoa after buying the
gloves. Jon asks Sara for her name and phone number. Sara, who believes
in fate and destiny, refuses to give him either.

"If we're meant to meet again, we will," she says.

Personally, I think that we are in control of our own fate. I'm sure
that there is an outline or grand plan, but we can change that outline
at any time we choose.

Sara seems disappointed when things don't immediately work out the way
she hoped, but she decides to try a few more "destiny tests."

The "tests" include placing Jon's name and number on a five-dollar bill
- and then spending it.
Jon, dumbfounded and clueless, wonders what the heck she is doing. Sara
explains that if the five bucks comes back to her someday, they were
meant to be together.

The next test is that she writes her name and number in a book by
Gabriel Garcia Marquez. If Jon ever finds the book in a used bookstore,
then he can call Sara and they were meant to be.

I really don't agree with all of those tests. It seems to me that if Jon
and Sara are trying so hard to prove that they are meant for one
another, then perhaps "fate" should be rather irrelevant. It doesn't
make sense
to put something off if it's in reach and you really want it.

They go through a series of events in which they try to track each other
down. Often, Jon would show up right after Sara left, or vice versa.
There were so many of these coincidental meetings and instances where
they missed each other, it began to seem rather ridiculous.

I think perhaps that I would have gotten rather bored with this movie if
it weren't for my friend Duce coming along. After the movie, she
commented that it was "strange, but not bad."

Perhaps Sara's idea that fate does exist, does have some merit. Though
it would take a lot more than a chick flick to convince me of that.

I believe that if you truly believe in something, then perhaps it will
come true. Listen to your heart and all will be well even if there is a
struggle.
