Mr. Deeds (PG-13) at the Gaslight

Daughter: three stars
Dad: one star

By Katherine Northup

“Mr. Deeds” was a less than brilliant movie about a small town boy who inherits a billion dollars. Don’t get me wrong, I adore some of Adam Sandler’s work, but this is just another cookie-cutter role that he’s played more than once.

Longfellow Deeds (played by Adam Sandler) is a distant relative of a billionaire who froze himself into a Popsicle on an expedition to Mt. Everest’s summit.

Deeds inherits the money, and can’t really figure out what to do with it.

Sandler plays the ‘dumb guy who gets smart’ just as often as Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the ‘ditsy bimbo.’ It just
never ends, does it?

There were quite a few funny scenes. I loved how servant Emilio Lopez (played by John Turturro) sneaks around and pops up in the most unexpected places. That wasn’t ever explained, but it was amusing nonetheless. I liked the ending. I won’t spoil it, but I thought it was the only thing out of the ordinary in the movie.

I laughed a lot, and there wasn’t much crying, so I’d say “Mr. Deeds” is in pretty darn good shape. Even though this movie wasn’t the best I’ve ever seen, it definitely wasn’t the worst. To those readers who do go see “Mr. Deeds,” have fun and I wish you all many laughs

P.S. Dad didn’t like it much. He gave it one star. He said Clarence the angel and Frank Capra could both be heard sreaming in the heavens throughout opening weekend.
