Carroll soccer earns post-season honors

By Independent Record - 12/11/08

The Carroll College soccer program was well represented on both the All-America and Academic All-America teams in 2008.

The Saints were led by senior Katie Joseph earning All-America honor for the second year, while three other Saints - Hannah Young, Talya Lorenz, and Catherine Beall - made the academic team.

"Katie has been a special player for the Saints soccer team over her four seasons of play," said Carroll coach Dave Thorvilson. "She has started in just about every game of her college career and has been the anchor to our defense during that time. I am excited to see a player of her caliber be honored two years in a row and for a player in the Frontier Conference and our soccer program to get national recognition. Katie will be missed next year but we are hoping to retain her services as an assistant coach as she finishes up her nursing degree next fall."

To earn Academic All-American honors, an athlete needs to be a junior or higher and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher.

"With such a young team this year it is good to see our upperclassmen set such a good example in the classroom, said Thorvilson. "Our student-athletes come to Carroll to get a good education and work very hard at their time-management skills to post a high GPA and still meet the high standards of playing a college sport at Carroll College."

Despite the challenge of coaching a team with 14 freshmen and a mere three seniors, coach Thorvilson was able to lead the program to back-to-back frontier conference championship and an overall regular season record of 12-6. The Saints hosted the Unaffiliated Conference Championship, advancing to the championship game before losing to Rocky Mountain College in a 1-0 decision.

Saints seek spot in NAIA tournament

The Carroll College soccer team didn't want to spend the Frontier Conference tournament anywhere but at home.

The Saints (11-6-0), who tied with Rocky Mountain College for the regular season title, will play host to the University of Great Falls (3-11-1) in the first game of the tournament today at noon. Rocky Mountain (12-3-0) and Westminster (7-10-1) play in the second game at 2 p.m. Story

By CURT SYNNESS - Independent Record - 11/16/08

The Carroll College soccer team battled Rocky Mountain College down to the wire in the Frontier Conference championships at Nelson Stadium, but missed out on qualifying for nationals after a 1-0 defeat Saturday.

The Bears’ winning goal was scored by Allison Beckers at 38 minutes, assisted by Anna Clark.

“I was outside the 18 (yard stripe), took a deflection and sent a shot toward the net,” explained a jubilant Beckers afterwards. “I didn’t know if it would go in or not, but when it did, I was like...well, it was very exciting.” more

Senior Day Success

Helena, Mont.-Saturday November 1st saw the Saints end their regular season with a 3-0 win over the University of Great Falls as they honored three seniors.  The weather was in the 60's and the football team on the road so the soccer team got to play a rare Saturday match and be home in front of a friendly crowd of about 400.  Katie Joseph, Talya Lorenz, and Bobbi Allard played their last regular season matches of their careers and prior to playing in the Unaffiliated Tournament in a week and a half they have been part of 55-17-4 record winning 75% of the their games.  The Saints found the back of the net in the 30th minute of play as Meghan O'Connell played a perfectly timed ball to a streaking Hannah Young who slotted the ball far post.  Just 5 minute later the duo struck again as Meghan O'Connell struck a ball that Lindsey Saunders could not save as it bounced to a wide open Hannah Young for her second of the match.  The ladies would take a 2-0 lead into halftime.  The second half would be a little less thrilling but Meghan O'Connell would take a ball from Kellyi Benson for her 10th goal of the season in the 72nd minute of play.  Katie Beall was credited with 4 saves and earned the clean sheet for Carroll.  Lindsey Saudners came up with 10 saves on the losing end for the UGF Argo's.  With the win the Saints earned a share of the Frontier Conference Championship.  This marks the second strait year for the Saints and the win should allow them to host play-offs due to a stronger strength of schedule then the rest of the conference.  "We played well today and UGF came out hard and gave us a tough match.  It was honor to highlight our three seniors today and send them out with a win.  This win will help give us momentum into the post season," stated coach Thorvilson.
