Carroll claims all-sports trophy

Carroll College has claimed the 2007-2008 George Bandy Memorial All Sports Trophy in the Frontier Conference.The award is presented each year to the school that accumulates the points based upon the league finish in each conference sport.
Nine colleges were in the running for the 2007-08 Bandy Award. Carroll College led the way with 111 points. Lewis-Clark State place second with 109 points while Rocky Mountain College was third with 84 points.
The 2007-08 season included first-place finishes by the Carroll football, men’s basketball and women’s soccer teams. Carroll’s men’s and women’s cross country teams, along with the women’s basketball teams each finished second in their respective sports.
“This is a great honor for Carroll College and Saints athletics,” said Carroll athletic director Bruce Parker. “Achievements such as the Bandy Award are testament to the quality of student-athletes, coaches and staff that we are fortunate to have here at Carroll.”
In the fall, head coach Mike Van Diest and the Carroll football program earned their eighth straight Frontier Conference championship as well as winning their fifth NAIA national championship in the past six seasons. It was the third time the Saints have claimed the title with a perfect record (15-0).
The Carroll soccer team won the Frontier Conference and Region I championship and earned its second berth into the NAIA national tournament. Carroll advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in the program’s history.The Carroll women’s and men’s cross country teams each placed second in the Frontier Conference and advanced to the Region I championships.
The winter sports season saw the women’s basketball team finish the season with an overall record of 28-6. Coach Shawn Nelson and the Saints earned their fifth straight NAIA national tournament berth and advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in the program’s history.
The men’s basketball program made a late-season surge to claim the Frontier Conference championship on the last night of the regular season. Coach Gary Turcott and the Saints advanced to the NAIA national tournament for the sixth time in the past eight seasons and finished the year with an overall record 23-9.
“It is really a team atmosphere here in the Carroll athletic department,” said Turcott. “Men’s basketball was glad to do our part.”
