It's up, it's good: Saints preserve perfect record with last-second field goal
Carroll College's fifth-year senior placekicker lined up with eight seconds left on the clock and split the uprights with a 31-yard field goal for the first game-winning kick of his collegiate career.
The three points lifted the No. 1 Saints (7-0 overall, 6-0 Frontier Conference) to a 24-21 win over the University of Montana-Western (2-5, 2-4) on Saturday and kept their 22-game win streak alive.
"That was the first game winner I've ever hit, so it was awesome," Thiry said. "Everybody was jumping on me, I couldn't even make out what most of them were saying. Everyone was just screaming and hitting me on the head." Story
Freshman QB delivers in win
Carroll College knows they can count on their freshman at quarterback. The question is: "Which one?"
The No. 1 Saints substituted Butte product Matt Ritter for Dane Broadhead (both true freshman) midway through the third quarter and Ritter certainly delivered. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound quarterback from Butte Central turned to his feet and scrambled for 66 yards on 12 carries, including an 18-yard run on third-and-long to keep the Saints' winning drive alive.
While designed as a pass play, Ritter found his receivers covered and a big opening in the center of the line. He cut right and benefited when one of Western's middle linebackers clocked a referee.
"Going back to pass, I didn't want to force anything or throw anything into a trap," Ritter said. "Running with my feet was my best option." Story

Rush defense - When it came to the ground, the Bulldogs weren't going far. Jordan Clary netted 49 yards on 12 carries (4.1 yards per carry), but he was the only threat. In all, the Saints allowed just 64 yards rushing, about five more than they allow per game. Grade: B+ Grades

Grading the Saints
PASS OFFENSE: B
Quarterback Dane Broadhead completed 15 of 22 passes for 183 yards and two scores, but the freshman also took three sacks, and completed just two passes longer than 19 yards. Broadhead completed 3 of 5 passes on third downs, all of which resulted in first downs.
PASS DEFENSE: A
A week after EOU quarterback Chris Ware threw for five TDs and ran for three more, the Saints stuffed the Mounties through the air. Ware hit just 16 of 35 passes and the Saints sacked him five times. And, they picked off three passes, returning two, er, one for a touchdown. Grades
Owen Koeppen Letts go in win
Leon Lett lives! Just ask Carroll College football player Owen Koeppen.
On the third play of the Saints' game at Eastern Oregon University Saturday, Koeppen, a senior linebacker, stepped in front of a pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. Almost.
With a wall of blockers leading him, Koeppen ran and celebrated the touchdown along with the rest of his teammates on defense and on the sideline, except the ball didn't cross the goalline.
"I think I may have been a foot away," Koeppen said after the top-ranked Saints won 48-10 to improve to 6-0 overall. "We were all celebrating, but I just didn't run all the way to the end zone, the old Leon Lett play." Story
