Steffan Francischetti

francischetti.jpgCarroll math and engineering senior Steffan Francischetti (left) has received a SMART fellowship for graduate school. This is the first time a Carroll student has won this award. From a competitive field of over 2,000 applicants, approximately 200 awards were made. The award means Steffan was selected by Air Force Research Lab - Director of Energy for work during summer internship periods and for post-graduation service employment placement. His award includes a living allowance of approximately $33,000 (stipend, salary, or combination), full tuition and customary enrollment fees for four academic years in grad school, health insurance, plus a book allowance of up to $1,000 per year, and internship and orientation travel expenses. Pursuant to this honor, Steffan has chosen to attend Colorado State University starting this fall to pursue a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. He notes that he may be concentrating his studies on extreme ultraviolet lasers or possibly high-powered ultra-fast lasers.
