Halfway between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, Carroll College is located in the heart of the Northern Rocky Mountains ecosystem. Through course work, internships and out-of-class learning programs, students have many opportunities to experience this unique system firsthand.
The Environmental Studies major is interdisciplinary in nature. The program's core courses provide students with a common interdisciplinary base to enable them to learn basic data analysis, understand foundational issues, and see the relationship of environmental ideas from several fields of study.
The core is not limited to classroom learning: students will do research in campus and area laboratories, work in the field with professionals in government, industry or the nonprofit sector, and strive to use their classroom, research, and field education and experiences in practical efforts to improve the Helena-area environment.
The areas of concentration enable students with varying academic and career interests and abilities, who share a common interest in the environment, to become proficient in an area that best prepares them for their future work.

To prepare leaders with an enlightened understanding of our biosphere, with an appreciation for the relationship between humans and the environment, and with the skills needed for vocational opportunities in the fields of environmental policy and science.
"At Carroll I received a broad-based education of integrated sciences and humanities that provided me with the background necessary to pursue a
graduate degree in the interdisciplinary field of wildlife toxicology. Attending a smaller school meant that my professors knew my name and I wasn't just another number like you often see at large universities. The professors at Carroll made courses challenging as well as enjoyable (especially the labs)! As a result, when I entered the Wildlife and Fisheries PhD program at Texas A&M University I was very well prepared for the rigors of grad school. The faculty is outstanding and they are extremely dedicated to their students, even after we've graduated! I owe a large part of my success to their teaching and mentoring. Not only did I receive a great education at Carroll, I also made life long friends with other students and my professors. Some of my most memorable experiences are from my time at Carroll!"
