Jazz Band (MUS 231-232) is dedicated to building a repertoire of jazz standards and developing skills in jazz improvisation. The band performs each semester for events both on and off campus. Jazz Band is offered for one credit per semester and is open by audition. Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:45-5:00 p.m. Scholarships are available by audition only. The Carroll College Department of Fine Arts presents the Jazz Band in its Spring Concert, “Spotlight on Miles,” on Thursday, April 28, 2016, at 4:00 p.m. in the Campus Center, and on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. in the Carroll Theatre. The concert on May 3 will be the final event ever to be held in the Old North Theatre before construction of the new chapel begins. The program will feature two tunes by Miles Davis, Four and Seven Steps to Heaven, plus tunes recorded by the Miles Davis nonet on the album Birth of the Cool, the original nonet version of Moon Dreams and a mambo rendition of Gerry Mulligan's Venus de Milo. The band will also perform Chuck Israel's arrangement of Who Can I Turn To, Havona by Jaco Pastorius, Lazy Bird by John Coltrane, and a Dixieland version of Lazy River. Two vocalists join the band for the standards I've Got You Under My Skin, My Funny Valentine, Something's Gotta Give, and Summer Wind. Free admission. Call (406) 447-4303 for more information.
