Jazz Combo
Overview
Jazz Combo (MUS 231-232) is dedicated to building a repertoire of jazz standards and developing skills in jazz improvisation. The combo performs each semester for events both on and off campus. Jazz Combo is offered for one credit and is open by audition to students who have experience playing an instrument, including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, piano, and drums. Previous jazz experience is helpful but not a prerequisite. With the exception of piano and drums, musicians in the Jazz Combo provide their own instruments. Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:45-5:00 p.m. Scholarships are available by audition only. Auditions will include a prepared piece of the student's choice, sight-reading, and improvisation. Spring Concert, May 2, 2013
“One For the Road” is the theme for the Carroll College Jazz Combo’s Spring Concert on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. in the Carroll Theatre. Fourteen students directed by Dr. Lynn Petersen will perform jazz standards by Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Red Garland and Horace Silver. The program also includes Tito Puente’s Ran Kan Kan, Dixieland tune Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue and Thomas “Fats” Waller’s Ain’t Misbehavin’. Additional songs featuring the band’s vocalists include Big Spender, Can’t Help Falling In Love, Dream a Little Dream of Me, Old Devil Moon, and One For My Baby. Admission is free.
