Career Opportunities and Graduate Studies

Carroll's English graduates can look forward to excellent placement opportunities in various careers, professional schools, and graduate programs around the country. Approximately one-third of Carroll's English graduates become educators in primary or secondary schools. Others pursue successful careers in advertising, business, communications, journalism, public relations, politics, publishing, and numerous other fields.

Carroll's English graduates often choose to pursue advanced degrees (M.A., M.F.A., Ph.D., etc.) in graduate programs and law schools across the United States and around the world. English faculty at Carroll are committed to placing qualified students into their chosen careers or the finest professional and graduate programs possible. Preparation for the Graduate Record Exam (G.R.E.) is a significant feature of this commitment to provide graduates with a solid foundation for academic and professional success.

Organizations and Conferences

The Alpha Zeta Epsilon chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society, is proud to recognize its new and charter members. Sigma Tau Delta "affords exceptional students in the field of English opportunities for furthering culture, for formulating ethical principles, for developing skills in creative and critical writing and for fostering a spirit of fellowship."

Carroll's English Programs encourage students to attend various national and international conferences around the region as speakers or spectators. These conferences help students to better understand contemporary issues in language and literature and become better acquainted with the scholars and professionals in their field.

Father Butko Awards in Freshman Writing

To honor the best writers enrolled in Freshman Composition during the current academic year, Carroll's Department of Languages and Literature sponsors the Freshman Essay Contest. The competition exists to encourage and recognize top-quality writing from the Composition Program. Five scholarships, valued at $250 each, are awarded in the spring to students submitting winning essays.
