Requirements

The major in Classical Studies requires the completion of 48 semester credits, including two years each of Latin (16 credits) and Greek (12 credits) and completion of two Classical Studies courses. Other program requirements include 18 semester credits from courses such as Art Appreciation, Survey of Classical Literature, Roman History, Introduction to Linguistics, Ancient Philosophy, and Introduction to the Old Testament.

Comprehensive paper

All candidates for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Studies are required to write a comprehensive paper. By spring of the junior year, students submit a proposal stating the topic of the comprehensive paper, signed by the faculty member who has agreed to direct the paper. Students are expected to research the topic of the paper during the summer. In the fall of their senior year, students take Senior Research Seminar, an independent study course that focuses on research development. As part of this course, students attend bi-weekly meetings to discuss their research progress. In the spring of the senior year, students take Senior Writing Seminar, which focuses on the completion of the comprehensive paper. The faculty director supervises these seminars.
