T
he American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapters of Carroll College and Montana State University hosted the ASCE Pacific Northwest Regional Student Conference in Helena on April 2 - 4, 2009. The student conference brought together approximately 300 students from 16 universities and colleges. Students from Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington competed in ASCE-sponsored steel bridge and concrete canoe competitions, along with other events that promote civil engineering.
In order to consolidate the duties of hosting such an event, the two student chapters chose to hold the entire conference at Carroll College, utilizing Helena's proximity to water for the canoe races, as well as to help celebrate Carroll College's Centennial Celebration.
The MSU student chapter coordinated the bridge competition, which was held in Carroll's PE Center, while Carroll will coordinated the technical paper and canoe competitions. The concrete canoe races took place at Serenity lake in the Helena Valley.
Both schools shared in the planning of other events related to the conference, including a day-long Civil Engineering Career Fair.
