Professional Licensing (The FE and PE Exams)
Engineering graduates must pass two national exams to become a licensed professional engineer. They are the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Professional Engineering (PE) exams. The FE is taken by graduating seniors and the PE is taken four years later after working as an engineer-in-training.
As evidenced by their success on the FE exam, Carroll's civil engineering graduates are well prepared to enter the profession. Carroll's overall pass rate on the FE is above 90%, compared to a national pass rate of about 75%. Every member of our most recent graduating class (2007) passed the exam.
Since 2000 seven graduates have passed the PE exam and are now licensed civil engineers.
Finding Success
Not surprisingly, Carroll's engineering graduates have had tremendous success finding full time employment. Every recent graduate works for either a private consulting firm or a government agency. Most of them work in the western United States, including Montana, Washington, Arizona, and California. About a quarter of our seniors went to graduate school before beginning their engineering careers.
Several Carroll engineering faculty are registered professional engineers who also work part-time for local consulting firms. They, therefore, have contacts in the profession that often lead to career opportunities for our students. Potential employers contact these professors or advertise for interested students through the Carroll College career center.
An extensive network of Carroll engineering alumni are also instrumental in finding employment for our graduates.
