Teaching in the Secondary Schools

Students interested in teaching in the secondary schools major in the content area they want to teach and take classes in teacher education. There are two ways that students may obtain a Class II Teaching certificate for grades 5-12. One way is to select a broadfield major in English literature & writing, mathematics, or social sciences. The other way is to have both a major and a minor in areas that lead to teacher certification.

Teach in Montana

To be licensed to teach in a secondary school in Montana, grades five through 12, a student must complete either a broadfield major or a major and a minor. Students interested in a broadfield major or a major and minor should contact not only individuals within the elected department, but must seek additional counsel from an advisor within the Department of Education: Health, Physical and Teacher. They must be accepted into the teacher education program.
