The Talking Saints opened its season by winning a third place sweepstakes award at the Casper College tournament in Casper, Wyo. on Oct. 9-10. Freshman Chris Axtman of Portland led the team with three first place finishes.
"We only sent the new team members and couple sophomores, but they held their own against full squads from around the region. We were very pleased," said coach Brent Northup.
Carroll swept debate with its sophomore team of Ryan Lorenz, from Helena and Forrest Laskowski, from Helena winning the Open division in Debate by beating one of the University of Wyoming's top teams. Three mostly freshman Carroll teams swept first, second and third in junior debate.
The winning junior teams were Chris Axtman, from Portland, Ore. and his partner Stacy Sammons, from Great Falls; Lada Bordewick, from Three Forks, Mont. and her partner Shelby DeMars, from Dillon, Mont.; Andy Burton from Billings and his partner Zach Robinson from Bend, Ore.
Chris Axtman won first in impromptu and extemporaneous speaking with Carroll students dominating the final rounds, with seven Carroll students among the 12 finalists.
The Talking Saints begin pursuit of their 20th consecutive Northwest Conference championship on Nov. 20 at Linfield College in Oregon.
