Dr. Thomas A. Clinch, 1927-1971

Professor of History at Carroll, 1953-1971

Dr. Clinch received his BA History from Carroll in 1949, his MA from the University of Notre Dame, and his PhD from the University of Oregon.  His dissertation at the University of Oregon became his most important publication, Urban Populism and Free Silver in Montana: A Narrative of Ideology in Political Action (Missoula: University of Montana Press, 1970).

Professor Tom Clinch was a well-known member of the Carroll History Department and ambassador for “The Carroll Family”.  He devoted his too-short career to the college, teaching from 1953 until his untimely death in 1971.  Some of his writings and orations are still on hand in the Corette Library and in the history department today.

On February 24, 1968, he delivered this speech to an alumni gathering in Portland, Oregon.  Dr. Clinch summarizes his research and offers his reflections.  The reader will be aware that Dr. Clinch was speaking to friends.  Please enjoy reading this unofficial history of Carroll’s first 50 years:
