THE WHOLE TOWN IS ABUZZ

Aldrin qns.jpgabout Astronaut Buzz Aldrin making his inaugural visit to Helena and to Carroll tomorrow, July 19, for the Symphony Under the Stars and related excitement. Tomorrow also marks the 39th anniversary of the Apollo 11 first manned moon landing, which brought Buzz stardom as the second man to leave a footprint in the lunar dust. Dr. Aldrin's first appearance of the day will be at ExplorationWorks!, an interactive museum of science and culture at the Great Northern Town Center, just across from Carroll's campus and next to the Great Northern Carousel. At ExWorks!, he will be signing his autobiography for children, "Reaching for the Moon," on Saturday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Aldrin is also the featured guest artist that evening at the big event: the fifth annual Symphony Under the Stars, beginning at 8:30 p.m. on the Scullon Practice Field at Carroll College. The concert will be performed by the Helena Symphony Orchestra and Chorale and will be conducted by Maestro Allan R. Scott. Dr. Aldrin will narrate Gustav Holst's "The Planets" from a script written by Carroll College Associate Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy Kelly Cline. The evening will conclude with John Williams' "Star Wars" performed with Big Sky Country's greatest fireworks show.

The Helena Astronomical Society and Carroll's Neuman Astronomical Society, plus amateur astronomers from across Montana, will be offering hands-on telescope viewing of the sun at the Aldrin book signing at ExplorationWorks!. The groups will also have telescopes at the concert grounds to offer solar, lunar and planetary viewing. The weather is predicted to be warm and perfectly clear. The astronomy clubs have also created a to-scale planet walk self-tour that starts with the sun at ExplorationWorks! and winds its way through Carroll College, ending at the concert site, where the outer asteroid belt would be. This planet walk will offer an unguided walking tour illuminating the vastness of our solar system, with 13 informative signposts created as a scale model to show the relative distances of the planets from the sun and their relative sizes, plus tons of cool solar system data and info on the latest discoveries. Planet walk signs will be on display starting at noon on Saturday and remain up through the end of the concert.

Bergum will be available for purchase at the concert for $20. The poster depicts Helena landmarks as they would appear from space.

Admission to all events is free but the reserved seating for the concert is sold out. All events at the college are tobacco-free with the assistance of the Lewis and Clark County Tobacco Use Prevention Program. No plastic tarps, stakes or pets are permitted at the concert.  Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, picnic meals and their friends and families to an "out of this world" evening on the verdant Carroll College campus.

More information on ExplorationWorks' space science exhibits and Dr. Aldrin's book-signing is available at http://explorationworks.org/  or by calling the museum at 406-457-1800.  Information on the Fifth Annual Symphony Under the Stars on the Web is at http://helenasymphony.org/.

Here's a quick FAQ on the rest of the details:

Where may I park?

Parking will be at a premium on the Carroll campus as certain lots are reserved for the musicians, stage and audio crews, etc. There is a very limited number of spaces on the north side of the PE Center for concertgoers who have physical disability plates or permits or display disabled veterans plates.  Volunteers will be stationed with golf carts at the PE Center to ferry patrons who might have difficulty walking to the concert site

There will be a marked section on North Benton Avenue just north of O'Connell Hall reserved for drop-offs only.  The campus parking lots at Getchell and Lyndale will be open to the public.  Concertgoers are also encouraged to use the Great Northern Town Center parking garage south of Lyndale and a short walk from campus.  This parking location is also close to ExplorationWorks! where many related space science programs are taking place throughout the day.

What time and where is the musical instrument petting zoo?

The petting zoo where children or the young at heart can try out different musical instruments under the tutelage of musicians is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. in a tent between the PE Center and Nelson Stadium. Please note, however, that the PE Center lot is only open to vehicles with disabled or handicapped plates or permits.

Can I buy food and drink at the concert?

Yes, the Artbeats volunteers will be selling wine, beer, and bottled water with profits split among the Symphony, Grand Street Theatre and the Holter Museum of Art.   Coney Island will be offering hot dogs, polish dogs, bratwurst, hamburgers, and nachos;   Great Northern Carousel and Ice Cream Co. will be selling ice cream, and fruit smoothies and cappuccino will be available at Island Oasis.   They will be located on the south side of Guadalupe Hall.

Carroll student Hiromi Ishida, a classical pianist and piano teacher from Tokyo, Japan, will perform the Schubert works while sharing the stage with Artisan dancers. This is Ishida's first formal public performance in Helena. Mulcahy discovered Ishida's talent as she listened to her play the grand piano in Carroll College's Campus Center between classes.

Also new to Artisan Dance this year is tango master David Caditz of Bozeman, now living in San Francisco, who will present a modern and a traditional tango dance with his partner Lisette Perelle, also of the Bay area. Together, the couple brings 30 years of combined experience as tango dancers and instructors and have been featured in tango films.

For classical ballet lovers, the night's program will include an excerpt from "Raymonda," which will feature the Artisan Dance corps and the returning husband and wife team of Ukrainian-born Mykhaylo Izotov and Melian Izotova.

"For Those of Us" tickets are available at the Myrna Loy box office at 15 North Ewing. Call 443-0287 for tickets, which will also be sold at the door.
